Too Big to Miss
Recently I have been thinking a lot about the story of David and Goliath in the Bible. Maybe it is because of my recent obsession with the Mark Lowry song, "Too Big to Miss" or maybe it is because i just recently read the story in my daily Bible readings.
Have you ever thought about what it would have been like to be David that day? When i think of the story i often think of the work, courage. David had a lot of courage! He also had faith. He felt God's call and he went for it. We dont read that he hesitated even though I imagine there were a few thoughts going through his head, but even though people laughed at him and told him he was insane, he still went for it. He won a battle that day with one small stone. He of course couldnt have done it with out the Lord's help. The lesson Mark Lowry draws from this story is taking the challenges in our life and remembering that we dont have to face them on our own. This always challenges me.
As youth, I think we all kind of crave to be the hero sometimes. We all like the idea of saving a life or making a big impact of some sort. But if it actually came down to doing something like David did, would we have the courage to do it? If God put the opportunity in our path to make a big impact in someones life would we jump at it? I think God does give us these opportunities all the time. For example, if you are in school you prolly have many opportunites to impact the non-christians around you. All you have to do is look for them. Some of you might go to a Christian school. Not all people at a Christian school are Christians. Also if you are in the older grades you have many opportunities to help out the little kids in the school. You can make a huge impact on a six yr olds life by just being kind and taking the time to care and talk to them. If you are at work, you prolly work with some non-christians or serve some non-christians. Again, God will bring up opportunities for us to impact their lives if we will just watch and listen for his call. What about our smile. It is rare that if you give a full out grin to someone that they dont smile back. Just like that you made someone happy for a bit at least. There are so many times in our lives that we rush through with out realizing we just missed an opportunity to make a difference.
Recently at work I had my ipod playing on the dock. it was a slower day and i had it pretty quiet. a casting crowns song was playing. one of my customers came up to the counter and told me she loved my music. she recognised the group and we immediately talked about a few other Christian groups we both agreed on liking. i would have never known she was a Christian if I wouldnt have been playing my music. Because of this i had the opportunity to meet another follower of Christ. God has all kind of surprises in our life.
It is always a challenge for myself to remember why we are here on earth and try to listen to God's calling and follow what he wants me to do and say each day. I want to have the courage and faith we see in David when he fought Goliath. that is my challenge for this week!
